Stanley Kubrik's Eyes Wide Shut is the final work of the legendary director, who died within a week of completing the edit. It stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who at the time were Hollywood's most bankable celebrity couple. The movie was shot on a open-ended schedule which finally totaled over 400 days due to Kubrick's attention to detail and obsession with symbolism.
Special closed sets of New York City were recreated to the finest detail in London so that Kubrik didn't have to get in an airplane. Cruise and Kidman play William and Alice Harford. The couple are a physician and a gallery manager who are wealthy, successful, and travel in a sophisticated social circle. However, a certain amount of decadence crosses their paths on occasion. A visit to a formal-dress party leads them into sexual temptation, which is one of the themes of the movie.
<h3><span style="color: #993366;">Confronting Infidelity</span></h3>
William is drafted into helping a beautiful girl who has overdosed on drugs. Meanwhile Alice is charmed by a man bent on seduction. Neither William nor Alice act on their adulterous impulses. However, once the issue has been brought into the open, things change. It begins a dangerous season of erotic gamesmanship for the couple. William in particular openly confronts his desire for new sexual experiences. Alice teases and taunts the same way that Goddess Ishtar treats her men, breaking the illusion that her husband has of their 'love'. Kidman grew up in these same elite circles full of ritual and mind control, so she knows how to act the part because she has lived it.

It is essentially a story of the tension between the polarities in life. Life verses death, procreation verses destruction, ego verses humility. Ultimately, Kubrik wanted to tell the story of the Illuminati and their secret rituals. Especially the wealth of the rich Elite verses the poverty of the average American. Also, no matter how well you do on your own merits, if you aren't born into their inner circle, nothing you do will get you into it. It's a bloodline members-only club.
What didn't make the final cut of Eyes Wide Shut may have been as fascinating as what finally appeared on screen. Harvey Keitel was replaced almost immediately by Sydney Pollack. Jennifer Jason Leigh was replaced by Marie Richardson after she had shot all her scenes and left town.
