Eyes Wide Shut seemed to be a rather boring movie. Eyes Wide Shut isn’t only about the two main character’s relationship, it is about all of the external forces and influences that play upon a relationship. It is about how this modern society no longer tries to support couples who are in a relationship, but rather, pulls and tugs on them in numerous ways. Mixed in with that is the interplay within ourselves between the conscious and the subconscious, the masculine and the feminine.
The movie is also about the group who rule our world from behind the scenes - a secret elite who orchestrate this struggle between polarities in a very specific and esoteric manner. Eyes Wide Shut does not spell anything out. Like great art, its messages are communicated through subtle symbols and mysterious riddles.
Stanley Kubrick unexpectedly died only five days after submitting the final cut of the movie to Warner Bros. This made Eyes Wide Shut his swan song. Considering the fact that Eyes Wide Shut is about an occult secret society that eliminates those who cross its path, some theories arose about Kubrick’s death and its suspicious nature. Did he reveal to the public too much, too soon? The answer to that seems pretty obvious.
