Moksha Medicine Psychedelic Mushrooms
Moksha Medicine Psychedelic Mushrooms takes a look at the resurgence of scientific interest in psilocybin (the active ingredient of psychedelic mushrooms). We’re shown the work being done by the Heffter Research Institute in this documentary. We see archival footage of psychedelic research in the 1950s and 1960s. We also see the anti-psychedelic media propaganda that was eventually used to quell the growing popularity of recreational LSD use.
The documentary includes exclusive interview material with Dennis McKenna, Roland Griffiths, David Nichols, and Bill Linton (all of the Heffter) along with archival clips of Timothy Leary. The film explores the importance of the psilocybin experience and the pressing issue of extending its legitimate use toward healthy people. This documentary gives special attention to the potential eco-psychological impact of psilocybin. (http://www.simongpowell.com)
Successful Use of Psilocybin
University of Arizona scientists recently fed psilocybin to nine volunteers whose obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was so disabling that many could not hold down a job or leave the house; they would observe elaborate cleaning rituals or shower for hours until they felt comfortable. Conventional treatments such as psychotherapy and medication had failed. In each of the nine patients in the study, psilocybin drastically diminished or melted away their compulsions for up to 24 hours. Several remained symptom-free for days.
Lou Genise is a compact man with a shorn head and Fu Manchu mustache. He is tucked away on the fifth floor of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Sitting propped up on a mattress in a hospital room, his clothes are unusual. He wears an eyeshade and listens to music through a headset. He is oblivious to the two psychiatrists sitting nearby, quietly monitoring his every move.
Worry and nausea has been the 37-year-old performance artist’s constant companions. For the last year he has been being treated for metastatic colon cancer. Yet the shroud of negativity has lifted under the influence of psilocybin. Psilocybin is a psychoactive ingredient in the hallucinogenic mushrooms used in sacred Native American rituals.
