Sophie Scholl The Final Days

Sophie Scholl The Final Days is the true story of Germany’s most famous anti-Nazi heroine brought to life. Scholl is a fearless activist in the underground student resistance group called the “Weiße Rose” (White Rose). Using historical records of her incarceration, the film re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl’s life. It is a journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence in 1943 Munich. Unwavering in her convictions and loyal to her comrades, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

How They Got Caught

Siblings Sophie Magdalena Scholl and Hans Scholl distribute anti-Nazi pamphlets in the University of Munich. However, they are caught by the caretaker who calls the Gestapo. Then they are arrested and Sophie is interrogated for days. In the beginning, Sophie manages to bluff the questioning official Robert Mohr, but Hans finally confesses everything. Now Sophie vindicates her ideals, but also tries to protect the other group members.

Sophie’s Loyalty to Her Ideals

Sophie becomes loyal to her ideal and comrades of The White Rose resistance group and pleads guilty of all charges to save them. In a couple of days, she is judged by a Nazi court with her brother Hans and their friend Christoph Probst. On February 22nd, the Scholls and their aide Christoph Probst are accused of high treason and sentenced to death.

Because the execution takes place the same day, Sophie has to take leave of her family. Her parents tell her that they are proud of her as they say their goodbyes.

The Lesson

This film is a blunt reminder of what can happen when a government takes complete control of their people’s lives. We should take note of this during these times. Australia and New Zealand could be headed down the same path if we don’t stand up for ourselves.
